This study explores the factors influencing students’ attitudes towards poetry, with a focus on poetic diction, pedagogy, and understanding of literary devices among senior secondary students. The study employed the survey design. The participants were 270 Senior Secondary II students across 10 schools in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Nigeria. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that poetic diction strongly influences students’ attitudes, particularly when the language is accessible (mean=3.06). Teaching methods, especially traditional approaches, had a moderate impact, with interactive methods seen as more effective (mea= 2.77). Comprehension difficulties also affected students’ engagement, but many students retained confidence in their ability to engage with poetry (mean=2.60).The study recommends adopting more interactive, student-centred teaching strategies, simplifying complex poetic language and providing stronger support for comprehension challenges to improve students’ attitudes towards poetry and enhance their overall appreciation of the literary genre.
